Louisiana Title Transfers

So You Bought a Vehicle? What Next?

  • The State of Louisiana requires all individuals who buy a vehicle to submit to Tax, Title, and Licensing through an Office of Motor Vehicle.
  • If the individual buys their vehicle from a dealership, typically Tax, Title, and Licensing is also handled through the dealership. We encourage our customers to double check with your dealership.
  • The State also gives you a 39 day deadline (upon purchase date of vehicle) to submit to TT&L.

What is a Title Transfer?

A Louisiana Title Transfer is defined as a transfer of ownership of a vehicle from one individual to another by either sale or donation.

What do I need?

For a Basic Sale of a Vehicle:
  • Louisiana Title (Notarized)
  • Notarized Bill of Sale (If back of title is on 2nd or 3rd assignment)
  • Copy of Valid Louisiana Driver’s License or ID
  • If vehicle has a Lien being recorded you must present copy of UCC-1 or Security Agreement
For a Basic Donation of a Vehicle:
  • Louisiana Title (Notarized)
  • Notarized Act of Donation
  • Copy of Valid Louisiana Driver’s License or ID
  • Louisiana Law does not allow for recording of Lien while processing an Act of Donation.
For Out-of-State Purchases:
  • If the title is an out-of-state title, Louisiana requires proof that the seller is also from Out-Of-State.
  • The State accepts two forms of proof in the form of either an Out-Of-State Notary or a copy of the seller’s Out-Of-State Driver’s License.
